Fender removal is part of installing the Vertical Doors, Inc. Vertical Door Conversion Kit on a Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray. Removing the front fender provides access to the hinge area so the installer can replace the original hinges, complete the required clearance work and adjust the door.

This VDI video focuses on fender removal for the traditional Corvette C8 Vertical Door Kit, part number VDCCHEVYCORC820. Use it alongside the complete vehicle-specific instructions supplied with your kit.

Review the procedure before starting work. The video covers one part of the conversion, so keep the supplied installation instructions available for the remaining hinge, wiring, clearance and adjustment requirements.

Before Removing the Fender or Original Hinges

  • Confirm the application: Match the kit to the Corvette model, model year and modifications.
  • Review the complete instructions: Understand the panel-access and hinge-installation requirements before disassembly.
  • Record the original door alignment: Before loosening the factory hinges, use painter's tape and matching reference marks across the door and adjacent body to document the starting position.
  • Support the door safely: The original hinges must not be loosened without the door properly supported.
  • Plan the clearance work: Installation includes nonvisible trimming for hinge-arm clearance, wiring checks and final alignment.

Why Fender Access Matters

The C8 kit mounts at the factory hinge locations, but a bolt-on hinge conversion still involves body-panel access and clearance work. Fender removal lets the installer reach the mounting area and assess the space needed for the replacement hinge.

The original Corvette doors remain on the vehicle. With the traditional VDI system, each door opens outward first and then raises vertically. The wiring and surrounding panels must have enough clearance throughout that movement.

Checks Before Returning the Car to Service

Fender removal is only the access stage. After the conversion, check door alignment, latch engagement, surrounding panel gaps, hinge stops, gas-shock operation and wiring clearance through the full range of movement.

The door should move without contacting the fender or pulling on its wiring. If something binds or the alignment is incorrect, stop and resolve it before using the car. Contact VDI for kit-specific technical questions.

If fender removal, clearance trimming or door alignment is beyond your experience, request installation at Vertical Doors, Inc. in Lake Elsinore, California, or review the VDI Installer directory.
