  • Work on a level, well-lit surface and protect the bumper, fender, door, glass, trim, and interior.
  • Follow the correct Chevrolet service procedure when disconnecting the battery and removing factory panels or connectors.

  • Photograph and measure the original upper and lower door gaps, door-to-apron distance, and latch-to-striker relationship.

Chevrolet Camaro installation overview

This crawlable overview summarizes the common sequence in both VDI Camaro manuals. Use the correct PDF photographs and diagrams for the exact fasteners, brackets, wiring route, and adjustment points.

1. Disconnect the battery

Complete the correct battery-disconnection procedure before releasing door wiring, removing electrical components, or working around the hinge area.

2. Protect the vehicle and remove the front fender

Protect painted edges with painter's tape. Remove the wheel-well fasteners and the bumper, side-skirt, upper-fender, and rear-fender attachment points identified in the correct manual. The 2016-2024 manual includes passenger-side access behind the windshield-washer reservoir and recommends removing the complete side skirt to avoid damage.

3. Access the door check and wiring

Remove the interior components identified in the correct manual so the factory door check and wiring retainers can be reached. Release the required harness clips or retainers to establish enough protected wire movement for the door to raise without tension.

4. Mark and secure the factory door position

Before loosening the factory hinges, mark the door on both the vertical and horizontal planes. Measure the distance between the apron and the door edge at the upper and lower hinge locations. Secure the door in its recorded position with protected supports, spacers, painter's tape, and a qualified helper.

5. Remove the required bracket and factory hinges

Remove the generation-specific apron or fender bracket shown in the correct PDF so the VDI hinge can sit flush against the vehicle. Keep the door fully supported while removing the factory hinge hardware.

6. Install the correct VDI hinge assembly

Install the left- or right-side VDI hinge at the factory mounting points with the hardware assigned to that location in the correct manual. Confirm that the mounting surface is flat and the hinge is seated correctly before beginning door adjustment.

7. Restore the horizontal door alignment

Use adjustment nut #1 and Allen set screw #2 shown in the manuals. Bring the set screw into contact with the stop, then open and close the door while adjusting until the latch meets the striker and the recorded factory gaps are restored. Leave nut #1 loose until after the shock is installed because the alignment must be checked again.

8. Prepare the shoulder bolt and shock

Warranty-critical VDI step: Grease the body of the shoulder bolt, apply red threadlocker to the shoulder-bolt threads, and grease the lower contact surface of the shock end exactly as shown in the PDF.

Keep tools off the shock body and shaft. Tool marks or other damage can affect shock operation and warranty coverage.

Do not grip, scratch, paint, or force the shock body or shaft with pliers or other tools.

9. Install the gas shock with the door supported

Have a helper raise and fully support the door. Seat the shock's spherical rod mount in the spherical bearing, install the shoulder bolt at the swing arm, and secure the lower shock end with the retaining pin as illustrated. Never rely on a loose or partially installed shock to support the door.

10. Set the vertical opening and lubricate the hinge

Adjust opening screw #3 until the swing arm can move vertically without binding. Fine-tune set screw #2 so the door returns to the striker correctly. Grease the nub and swing-arm contact points and every zerk fitting identified in the PDF.

11. Complete wiring and fender-clearance work

Complete the exact wiring-protection and inner-fender-clearance procedure for the correct Camaro generation. Trim only the non-visible inner fender material required for unrestricted hinge movement, smooth the finished surface, and protect the wiring from tension, pinching, abrasion, sharp edges, and moving hinge components.

12. Verify operation, reassemble, and repeat

Do not reinstall the fender until door alignment, set-screw security, shock installation, lubrication, wiring movement, and hinge clearance are correct. Cycle the door outward, upward, downward, and closed several times. Reinstall the vehicle components, confirm the wires cannot be pinched, and repeat the complete process on the opposite side.

Camaro generation-specific steps

2010-2015: VDCCHEVYCAM10

  • The manual releases wiring below the foot trim and kick plate, then reroutes the harness to obtain the movement needed for the raised door.
  • The illustrated fender-bracket removal requires drilling two spot welds.
  • After alignment and shock installation, the manual trims the inner fender lip along the marked inside edge and smooths the surface.
  • The supplied L-bracket supports the fender. The manual drills an additional hole in the fender flange and secures the bracket with the supplied bolt and speed clip.

2016-2024: VDCCHEVYCAM16

  • The manual removes three 7 mm door-panel bolts, releases the interior harness and pull cable, removes the speaker, and releases two wiring clips and the factory harness tape.
  • The factory door check is removed through the speaker opening.
  • One apron bracket is removed so the VDI hinge can mount flush.
  • Page 10 shows two firewall wire-boot configurations. Follow that page exactly when protecting the exposed wiring and positioning the connector, plate, and grommet.
  • The manual trims and smooths the non-visible inner fender lip for hinge clearance before final reassembly.

A bolt-on VDI hinge uses the Camaro's factory hinge mounting pattern. It does not mean that the complete installation is free of clearance work: both official Camaro manuals require generation-specific bracket removal and inner-fender trimming.

Final operation and safety checks

  • The installed kit, PDF, and part number match the Camaro model year.
  • Each door opens outward to the VDI stop before it is raised.
  • The latch meets the striker without slamming, lifting, dropping, or forcing the door.
  • The closed-door position and panel gaps match the recorded factory alignment.
