This is an advanced automotive modification. 2016-2024 Chevrolet Camaro installation instructions

This crawlable overview follows the sequence in our verified VDCCHEVYCAM16 sixth-generation Camaro instructions. Use the current instructions supplied with your kit to identify the exact fasteners, apron bracket, wiring route, adjustment points, cutting line, supplied parts, and hardware locations.

1. Disconnect the battery

Complete the correct Chevrolet battery-disconnection procedure before releasing door wiring, removing electrical components, or working around the hinge area.

2. Protect the vehicle and remove the front fender

Protect the painted edges and adjacent surfaces. Remove the wheel-well screws and fasteners shown in the supplied instructions. Pull the front bumper forward enough to reach the front fender fasteners. Open the door to reach the upper rear fender fastener, pull back the splash guard for apron-bolt access, and remove the complete side skirt to reduce the risk of damaging it. On the passenger side, use the access path behind the windshield-washer reservoir. Remove the upper cover and remaining fasteners, then carefully remove the fender without scratching the bumper or door.

3. Remove the door panel, speaker, door check, and wiring retainers

Remove the three 7 mm bolts that secure the door panel. Carefully release the interior wiring harness and pull cable, remove the door panel, and remove the speaker. Release the two wiring clips and the factory tape identified in the supplied instructions so the harness can move freely. Remove the three bolts securing the factory door check, then take the door check out through the speaker opening.

Protect the harness throughout the installation. The wiring must not be stretched, pinched, scraped against a sharp edge, or routed through the moving hinge.

4. Mark and secure the factory door position

Before loosening the factory hinges, use painter's tape to mark the door on both the horizontal and vertical planes. Measure and record the distance between the body or apron and the upper and lower edges of the door as shown in the manual. Photograph the door gaps and latch-to-striker relationship.

Secure the door in its recorded position with protected spacers, supports, painter's tape, and an experienced helper. These reference marks are essential if the door moves after the factory hinges are loosened.

5. Remove the illustrated factory apron bracket

Remove only the factory apron bracket identified in the supplied instructions so the VDCCHEVYCAM16 hinge assembly can sit flush against the vehicle. Vehicles can differ, so use the current kit instructions to confirm the exact bracket and removal method before cutting or grinding.

6. Remove the factory hinges and install the VDI hinge

Confirm that the door is fully supported and that all alignment references are visible. Remove the factory hinge hardware, then install the correct right- or left-side VDCCHEVYCAM16 hinge assembly at the factory mounting points using the assigned VDI hardware.

Confirm that the mounting surface is flat and that the hinge is seated correctly before beginning door adjustment.

7. Restore the horizontal door alignment

Use adjustment nut #1 and Allen set screw #2 shown in the manual. Bring the set screw into contact with the stop, then open and close the door while adjusting until the latch meets the striker correctly and the recorded factory gaps are restored.

Leave nut #1 loose until after the shock is installed because the alignment must be checked and fine-tuned again.

Important installation and warranty step

8. Prepare and protect the VDI gas shocks

Do not skip these steps. Proper lubrication, threadlocker application, and shock protection are required during installation. Failure to complete these steps voids applicable warranty coverage and may cause future operation problems.

Grease and apply red threadlocker

  1. Apply grease to the smooth body of the shoulder bolt.
  2. Apply red threadlocker to the shoulder-bolt threads.
  3. Apply grease to the bottom contact surface of the shock end.
  4. Apply grease to the opposite shock-end contact surface shown in the illustration.

Protect the shock body and shaft

Warranty warning: Do not use pliers or other gripping tools on the shock body or shaft.

Do not scratch, paint, coat, or place foreign material on the shock body or shaft. Tool marks and surface contamination void applicable shock warranty coverage.

9. Install the gas shock with the door supported

Have a helper raise and fully support the door. Slip the bottom shock end into the spherical bearing identified as position #1 in the manual. Install the shoulder bolt into the swing arm at position #2, then secure the bottom shock end with the retaining pin at position #3.

Never rely on a loose or partially installed shock to support the door.

10. Set the vertical opening and lubricate the hinge

Open and raise the door. Adjust opening screw #3 clockwise until the distance between the nub and swing arm allows the swing arm to move vertically without binding. Recheck set screw #2 so the door returns to the striker correctly.

Add grease to the zerk fittings and the other contact points identified by VDI. Do not reinstall the fender until the door alignment is accurate, the set screw is secured, and the specified hardware and threadlocker steps are complete.

11. Modify and protect the wiring route

Follow the wiring option shown in the current instructions supplied with your kit. The verified manual modifies the wire boot, protects exposed wiring with friction tape or cloth wire-loom tape, and places the large connector inside the firewall opening. Use the supplied plate and grommet to cover the opening and secure the plate as directed. The manual also shows an alternate connector orientation.

Check the harness through the complete door movement. No wire may be stretched, pinched, exposed to a sharp edge, or placed where the swing arm can damage it.

12. Trim the inner fender, verify operation, and reassemble

Trim only the non-visible inner fender lip identified in the supplied instructions to provide clearance for the moving VDI hinge. Follow the marked cutting line, then sand or grind the finished surface completely flat and smooth.

Cycle the door outward, upward, downward, and closed several times. Confirm that the latch meets the striker without forcing the door and that the hinge, shock, wiring, fender, door, and trim remain clear throughout the complete movement.

When alignment and clearance are correct, close the door and reinstall the fender. Confirm that the wiring cannot be pinched or damaged. Repeat the complete installation, adjustment, lubrication, and inspection procedure on the opposite side.

Final operation and safety checks

  • The vehicle is a 2016-2024 Camaro and the installed kit is VDCCHEVYCAM16.
  • Each door opens outward to the VDI stopping point before it is raised.
  • Each latch meets its striker without slamming, lifting, dropping, or forcing the door.
  • The closed-door alignment and panel gaps match the recorded factory position.
  • The hinge, shock, wiring, door, fender, bumper, side skirt, and trim remain clear through the full movement.
  • No wire is stretched, pinched, exposed to a sharp edge, or routed through a moving hinge joint.
  • All specified bolts, adjustment nuts, set screws, shoulder bolts, retaining pins, grease fittings, brackets, and clips are secure.
  • The shoulder bolt, shock-end contact surfaces, hinge contact points, and zerk fittings have been lubricated as directed.
  • No tool marks, paint, scratches, coatings, or foreign material are present on either shock body or shaft.

  • Both doors have been cycled repeatedly and checked independently before the vehicle is driven.
