Fork and Phillips screwdrivers
3/16 Allen wrench, 1/4" Torx bit
9/16 wrench
Red Loctite and grease
Paint sticks or door shims, 2" painter’s tape
Zip ties, cloth tape, wire loom
Optional: extra wiring and connectors for extending harness slack
🔧 Step-by-Step Installation Instructions
1. Disconnect the Battery
Always disconnect your vehicle’s battery before starting work to avoid electrical shorts or airbag deployment.
2. Remove the Front Fender
In some vehicles, you will also need to remove the front bumper. Remove all screws or fasteners from the wheel well. Usually, you will have to remove bolts to loosen the bumper

Usually, you will have to open the door to remove (1) bolt holding the fender.
At this point you should be able to remove the fender.

3. Remove Door Catch
Open the door and remove bolts from the body and from the door. Push the door catch inside the door.
You will need to remove the door panel to retrieve the door catch.

4. Gain Wire Slack
Usually, you will need more
wire slack:
Remove foot trim, under it you will find the door wire harness. Use the fork to undo the wire harness retainers. This will give you the necessary wire slack to fully open the new Vertical Doors Inc. system.
Sometimes you will have to remove the door panel and speaker and gain the wire from inside the door cavity.

5) Prepare to Remove the factory hinges:
Before removing the factory hinges, use painters’ tape to mark the factory location of the door. Place the painters’ tape in the locations circled and make marks on the tape as shown for reference later

Close door and use painter’s tape to secure the door in preparation for factory hinge removal

Use several strips of 2” painters’ tape as shown to secure the door.

Tip: Cut a couple 3-inch pieces of paint stir stick to use as shims so the door does not move when you remove the factory hinges. Use them under and behind the door. Wrap them with painters’ tape to get the exact thickness you need to shim the door.
Make sure to measure and mark the distance between the body and the outer door skin at the front of the door by the top and bottom door hinge. Use paint sticks or something similar that you can hold square to the body and can extend past the edge of the door. Mark the location of the stick against the body on a piece of painters’ tape applied to the body. Mark the edge of the door on the stick

***It is very important you mark the exact location of the door before you remove the factory hinges. This will make the install and alignment a lot easier***

After you have marked the door location, secured the door to the body, and installed the shims, you can then remove the factory hinges and install the VDI Hinge.
6) Install new Vertical Doors Inc. system:
For the Vertical Doors hinge to sit flat against the apron, you might have to cut, or hammer flat, a portion of the apron. On some vehicle it creates a better finish if you make a plate to cover the modified area and either weld it in place or fasten it via screws/rivets. The new Vertical Doors Inc. system should sit flat against apron to work properly.

Hint* Tighten the bolts on the door first and then tighten the bolts on the body.
Hint* completely loosen the adjustment screw before installing the hinge
Hint* Push the main body of the hinge all the way towards the door before tightening the bolts on the body

Install the Shock
Have a helper lift the door. Apply "grease" to the shoulder bolt body and "bottom of the shock", and apply "red Loctite" to the threads. Insert the shock pin to lock in place.

7) Once hinge is locked in place, break nut #1 then turn Allen set screw #2 shown in the figure below until it hits the block then open the door and continue to adjust until the door matches with the striker. Open and close the door making sure it closes like factory.

Hint*(leave #1 nut loose until shock is installed. The allen set screw #2 will have to be re-adjusted after the shock is installed.
Hint* after shock is installed (Fine tune the Allen Adjustment screw (#2) to realign the door latch and striker. After the door is aligned, test the door by opening and closing, lifting, and lowering the door several times. Once done, tighten down nut #1 while holding screw #2
8) Install the shock.

Hint* (a helper to raise the door makes install easier). (Slip the spherical rod mount into the spherical ball bearing (1). Using a 1/4 Allen wrench, tighten the screw into the swing arm (2). After the shock is installed secure it by installing the pin in the bottom shock end (3). Tap the pin in with a hammer.
9) After shock is installed, re-install door panel, and lift the door. Adjust door opening screw #3 clockwise until clearance between nub #1 and swing arm is about 1/8 – 1/16th of an inch. Just enough so that the swing arm moves up and down freely without having any horizontal play.

Note: Do not install fender until the adjustment of the door is perfect, and the set screw is tightly secure. Also verify you do not have any interference.
10) Modify factory wire loom:
To be able to open and raise the door, cut the factory wire boot in half. Add wire loom to protect exposed wires and wrap with a cloth anti friction wire harness tape.
You may need to remove the door panel to gain extra slack. Release the clips holding the harness and pull it towards the front of the door. In some vehicles, some wires may need to be extended, but you should not cut and extend all the wires. Once you pull all the slack in the harness you can, then identify which wires need to be extended. Wrap the wire harness with tape and secure with zip ties.

Secure each end of the boot around the wires with a zip-tie so that it is watertight as shown.

On some vehicles you will have to tuck the connector inside the body and use a plate to cover the hole. Use a gromet to protect the wires.

11) Cut the inner lip of your fender to make room for the new Vertical Doors hinge. Note: After you have cut the fender use a sander or grinder and make sure the surface is completely flat and give it a finished look. Door trim or touch up paint help create a professional finish.

NOTE: EXAMPLE ABOVE IS FOR THE MAZDA RX-8 YOUR CAR MOST LIKELY, WILL HAVE A DIFFERENT CUT OUT.

SOMETIMES YOU WILL ALSO HAVE TO TRIM THE LIP ON THE FRONT EDGE OF THE DOOR (IF IT HAS ONE).
EXAMPLE ON THE RIGHT IS OF A C6 2005-2013 CHEVY CORVETTE.

SOMETIMES side moldings need to be moved or modified

Touch up the paint for a finished look.

12) Close the door and replace the fender by reversing step 2.
Hint* (Make sure the wires don’t get pinched and damaged)
13) For the other side just follow steps 2-12
✅ Final Tips
* Do not reinstall the fender until the door is perfectly aligned and secured
* Grease all hinge fittings every 3 to 6 months for long-term smooth operation
