A traditional VDI door opens outward to its designed position and then lifts vertically. Exact outward travel depends on the verified vehicle-specific application.

Fitment and Door Operation
How does a traditional VDI Vertical Door Kit operate?
The door first opens outward to its designed stopping position. The customer can then lift it vertically using the installed hinge and shock assembly. When closing the door, lower it through its controlled vertical path and then close it inward normally.
The exact outward travel, lift height, clearance, and amount of effort required depend on the vehicle, hinge design, shock selection, alignment, adjustment, and condition of the installation.
Can the doors still open outward for normal entry?
A traditional VDI conversion is designed to provide an initial outward motion before the door is raised. The available outward travel is application-specific and should not be assumed to be the same on every vehicle.
Can a vehicle with vertical doors be driven every day?

Maintenance, Shocks, and Replacement Hardware
What maintenance does a Vertical Door Kit require?

Why can’t I compress a VDI shock by hand?
VDI replacement shocks are highly pressurized and are selected to support the applicable door and hinge system. They are not expected to compress easily by hand.
Do not puncture, heat, open, clamp, modify, or use tools on the shock body or shaft. If you believe a shock has failed or no longer supports the door correctly, submit a replacement-shock verification request.
How do I request a replacement shock?
Replacement shocks are for qualifying Vertical Doors, Inc. kits. Proof of purchase is required. Information such as the vehicle, kit, shock side, shock-body measurement, and relevant photos may be needed to identify the correct replacement.
Submitting the form is a verification request, not an order or a guarantee that a particular replacement is available.
How do I request replacement hinge hardware?
