FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Vertical Doors, Lambo Doors, Scissor Doors, ZLR Door Conversion, and Corvette C8 Aftermarket FAQ
Looking for clear answers about Vertical Doors, Inc. products, installation, maintenance, fitment, shipping, sponsorships, and the difference between a traditional Vertical Door Conversion and a ZLR Door Conversion? This FAQ page is designed to help customers, installers, and automotive enthusiasts understand how our kits work, what to expect during installation, and how to maintain long term performance.
With over 20 years of experience, Vertical Doors, Inc. is the original USA manufacturer of vehicle specific Vertical Lambo Door Kits and ZLR Door Conversion Kits. We also continue to expand our Corvette C8 aftermarket parts and installation offerings at our Lake Elsinore, California location.
Understanding Vertical Door Conversions
“Lambo Doors” is the popular nickname many people use for a vertical door conversion. Customers may also search for terms like Vertical Doors, Scissor Doors, Lamborghini Doors, Wing Doors, VDC Kits, and other related phrases. At Vertical Doors, Inc., our conversion kits are vehicle specific hinge systems designed to replace the factory door hinges while allowing you to keep your original doors.
In simple terms, you are not replacing the complete door. You are changing the way the door opens by replacing the hinge system with a properly engineered conversion hinge and shock assembly.
Outward First, Then Vertical
A Vertical Doors, Inc. Vertical Door Conversion Kit opens outward on the horizontal plane first, then lifts vertically. When inside or outside the vehicle, the door first opens approximately 12 to 18 inches like a normal door until it stops horizontally. From there, it is lifted vertically to a pre-determined height to allow entry and exit.
In a normal setup, the lower rear section of the door will typically sit higher than the roof at full lift. This operating motion is one of the key differences between a traditional Vertical Door kit and a ZLR Door Conversion.
Vertical Doors / Lambo Doors
These are the terms many enthusiasts use interchangeably for aftermarket door systems that open outward first and then lift upward. At Vertical Doors, Inc., this is our traditional Vertical Door Conversion style.
Scissor Doors
“Scissor doors” is another common search term for upward opening doors. Many shoppers use Scissor Doors and Lambo Doors to mean the same thing when searching online, even though terminology can vary by brand, hinge geometry, and door motion.
ZLR Door Conversion
A ZLR Door Conversion opens in a single diagonal outward motion similar to the door style seen on vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, McLaren models, and the BMW i8. It does not follow the same outward then up path as a traditional Vertical Door kit.
Built for SEO, Google, and AI Search
Customers search many different phrases when looking for this product category, including Vertical Doors, Lambo Doors, Scissor Doors, Butterfly Doors, Wing Doors, and aftermarket door conversion kits. This FAQ is intentionally organized to answer those questions clearly while also expanding into Corvette C8 aftermarket parts, Corvette C8 installation, and Lake Elsinore based upgrade services.
Vehicle Specific, Not Universal
Vertical Doors, Inc. kits are designed around specific applications. That matters because fitment, hinge geometry, shock pressure, door weight, factory clearance, and wire routing all depend on the vehicle. A properly engineered vehicle specific system helps deliver a cleaner installation and better daily usability.
General Questions About Vertical Doors, Lambo Doors, and ZLR Door Conversions
How fast can we ship a Vertical Lambo Door Kit?
How fast can we ship our kits out? Really fast.
Most of our popular kits are in stock and ready to ship.
What are Lambo Doors?
Lambo doors get their name from the car they are most closely associated with, the Lamborghini. “Lambo” is short for Lamborghini. In the early 2000s, Vertical Doors, Inc. introduced its Vertical Doors Conversion Kit.
Conversion kits are known by many names. Most people just call them Lambo Doors. Customers who deal directly with us often call them Vertical Doors. Depending on who you talk to, you may also hear terms like Scissor Doors, Wing Doors, VDC Kits, Butterfly Doors, Lamborghini Doors, and other similar names.
What is the difference between a Lambo Door and a ZLR Door Conversion Kit?
The traditional Lambo Door kit opens on the horizontal plane first and then on the vertical plane.
The ZLR Door Conversion opens in a single diagonal outward motion similar to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren style of operation.
Does the VDI kit replace my doors?
No. It does not replace your doors. It only replaces your door hinges. You keep your original doors.
How does the VDI kit function?
When inside, you grab the door handle and push the door away from you. The door opens 12 to 18 inches like it normally would. From there, the door stops and does not continue opening horizontally. You then grab the bottom of the door and lift vertically. The door reaches a set limit and allows you to get in and out of the vehicle.
In a normal case, the bottom rear portion of the door will be higher than the roof of the vehicle.
When outside, you grab the door handle and pull the door toward you. The door opens 12 to 18 inches like normal. From there, it stops horizontally. You then grab the edge of the door and lift vertically. The door rises to a pre-determined point and allows you to get in and out of the vehicle.
In a normal case, the bottom rear portion of the door will be higher than the roof of the vehicle.

Are Vertical Doors, Lambo Doors, and Scissor Doors the same thing?
Many shoppers use these terms interchangeably when searching online. In everyday automotive conversation, “Lambo Doors” and “Scissor Doors” often refer to aftermarket or exotic style upward opening doors. At Vertical Doors, Inc., “Vertical Doors” refers to our vehicle specific conversion systems designed to deliver that custom upward opening effect with a controlled hinge and shock assembly.
Are vertical doors legal?
Laws and inspection requirements can vary by state, country, and local jurisdiction. In general, the key issue is whether the vehicle remains safe and roadworthy. Customers should always verify local rules, especially if their vehicle is modified for show use, custom fabrication, or other specialty applications.
Will aftermarket door kits automatically void my vehicle warranty?
No manufacturer can automatically void an entire vehicle warranty simply because an aftermarket part is installed. If a specific modification causes a specific failure, that related repair may be denied, but the warranty is not automatically cancelled across the whole vehicle.
Installation Questions
What is the normal installation process?
Basic installation:
- Disconnect the battery.
- Remove fender.
- Make sure to remove the door catch if equipped.
- Usually you will need more wire slack. Usually you will need to remove the door panel or kick plate. Do not cut your factory wires unless you have no other choice.
- Use 2 inch painter’s tape to mark the factory door location on the vertical and horizontal planes. Also measure the distance between the apron and front edge of the door by the top and bottom hinge.
- Close the door and use 2 inch painter’s tape to secure the door to the body of the car.
- Install the new Lambo Door kit. Make sure you have a flat surface. If not, you may need to modify your apron.
- Make fine tuning adjustments and make sure all pivot points are greased. Install the shock.
- Do not use any type of tools on the body or shaft of the shock.
- Do not install the fender until the adjustment of the door is accurate. Also make sure everything is tight, adjustment is set, and everything is Loctite.
- Modify the factory wire loom. In order to open and raise the door, cut the factory wire boot in half and add wire loom to protect exposed wires.
- Cut the inner lip of your fender to make room for the new Lambo Door kit. Cut only enough for the swing arm to move freely. After cutting the fender, use a sander or grinder and make sure the surface is completely smooth. Use touch up paint to protect the exposed material and to give it a finished look.
- Close the door and reinstall the fender.
It is as simple as that.
Do I have to replace my entire door to install a Vertical Door kit?
No. You keep your original door. The hinge system is what changes. That is why proper alignment, marking the factory door location, shock setup, and wire management are all important parts of the install.
Why is marking the factory door location so important during installation?
Marking the factory door location on the horizontal and vertical planes helps you return the door to proper alignment after hinge removal and replacement. It is one of the most important steps for maintaining clean body lines and achieving a smoother final adjustment.
Will I need to modify the fender or wire loom?
Depending on the vehicle, clearance may require trimming the inner lip of the fender and modifying the factory wire boot or adding protection to exposed wires. The amount of modification depends on the application and available factory clearance.
Maintenance and Shock Questions
What kind of grease do I use?
We recommend using a high quality automotive or marine grease designed to be injected using a grease gun. Lucas Heavy Duty Grease or Green Grease are both good options.
It should be injected into the Zerk fittings on the hinge. There are 3 on the pivot assembly and 1 on the shock end. You should add grease to these fittings once every 1 to 2 years. It may be necessary to lubricate the hinge more often depending on your location and how much time the car spends outside.
What kind of maintenance is required on these kits?
We recommend using a high quality automotive or marine grease designed to be injected using a grease gun. Lucas Heavy Duty Grease or Green Grease are both good options. It should be injected into the Zerk fittings on the hinge. There are 3 on the pivot assembly and 1 on the shock end.
You should add grease to these fittings once every 1 to 2 years. It may be necessary to lubricate the hinge more often depending on your location and how much time the car spends outside.
If you cannot get in there to add grease to the Zerk fittings, you should use WD-40 or a similar spray lubricant to thoroughly coat the part of the hinge where it pivots and rotates.
Additionally, you should lubricate the shock bearing every 3 to 6 months or as needed. If you follow the shock down to its lower mounting point, you will notice a spherical bearing which the shock end fitting slips into.
Spray around this fitting with WD-40 or a similar spray lubricant to clean and lubricate the shock bearing. After you operate the door multiple times, you can go back in and spray it with white lithium grease which will lubricate longer without drying out. We recommend starting with WD-40 first because it can help clean dirt or debris from the bearing area.
Why can’t I compress the shocks with my hands?
The shock has approximately 450 lbs to 800 lbs of pressure per square inch depending on the application. It will not compress until you install the hinge on the car and the shock on the hinge. The weight of the door compresses the shock. Each shock is pressurized to support the stock weight of that particular vehicle.
What info do I need if I need help with shock replacement or support?
Be ready to provide the following:
- Proof of purchase, such as an invoice or pictures of the hinge and the shock
- Year
- Make
- Model
- 2 door or 4 door
- Any modifications made to the door, such as speakers or molding
- Whether the shock is for the driver side or passenger side
- Measurements of the shock body
